On 23.01.2024, the Saxony Chess Association hosted the annual Saxon Chess Olympiad in school chess.
For the first time, IPS Geithain was represented by a team at this event.
In the morning, our four boys from grades 2, 3 and 4 set off for Leipzig to compete against schools from the Leipzig district.
Out of 20 registered teams, 19 teams competed in the club room of the Red Bull Arena. Due to the large number of participants, the game was played in seven rounds according to the Swiss system, with each player having 15 minutes per game.
Our team faced opponents from elementary school including Markkleeberg, Taucha, Delitzsch, Rötha and Großpösna. Even if it wasn't enough for a top place in the end, all of the IPSG participants had a lot of fun and were able to gain competition experience. We are already looking forward to representing a team at next year's School Olympics.
Finally, a big thank you goes to our school management, who made this unique experience possible for the students by supporting them and giving them time off on this day.
